The Barrie Curling Club Board of Directors

Thank you for considering joining the Barrie Curling Club Board of Directors. The purpose of this document is to summarize the responsibilities of Board members. Complete information regarding the Board of Directors is available in the BCC by-laws, including the Terms of Reference document.

Barrie Curling Club Board of Directors

The Board of Directors consists of up to twelve Directors. Directors are elected in April and serve a three-year term. In some cases, Directors serve a one- or two-year term if Board vacancies are due to a previous Director not being able to complete their three-year term.  Directors can serve on the Board for a maximum of six consecutive years.

The Board Executive consists of the President, Past President, First Vice-President, Second Vice-President, and the Secretary-Treasurer.

Meetings and Time Commitment

The Board meets monthly at the BCC (including the summer months). Board members are also expected to attend fall and spring General Meetings. While some Board members attend selected meetings remotely, most Board members meet in person. There is, of course, flexibility if Board members are unable to attend due to work, travel, or health reasons. In advance of each Board meeting, Board members submit brief status summaries for their portfolio(s). Between Board meetings, Board members move forward activities in their respective portfolios. Most Board members engage in active collaboration with other Board members and club members through e-mail and in-person discussion.

The BCC Board is a “working Board” – Directors are expected to provide oversight and governance but also to take an action role in the planning and execution of events and tasks within their portfolio(s) and within the BCC in general. While the club Manager is available to assist Board members, execution of events and tasks is completed by a mixture of Manager action, effort by Board members, and effort by club membership (as planned and coordinated by Directors and committees).

Board Portfolios

Each Board member is assigned one or more portfolios. Each portfolio represents an area of Director responsibility. Portfolios are normally assigned in May/June, after election of new Board members. Portfolios are assigned after consultations between the President and each Board member. In some cases, portfolios are also assigned to club members not on the Board.

Current Board portfolios:

  • Advertising / Sponsorship
  • Bar & Kitchen
  • Bylaws & Procedures
  • City of Barrie
  • Communications
  • Community Outreach
  • Curling Leagues
  • Curling Ontario
  • Events
  • Finance
  • Health & Safety
  • Ice Quality
  • Lottery
  • Marketing
  • Membership
  • Property & Infrastructure
  • Risk Management
  • Social Media
  • Strategic Planning
  • Youth Program
  • Volunteers

From the list above, multiple Board portfolios are likely to become available for 2026/2027.  Reasons for these portfolios becoming available include that the Board member is reaching the six-year maximum Board tenure, Board members not seeking re-election, and Board members shifting portfolios and areas of focus.

Should a newly elected Director have expertise in a portfolio currently assigned to a Board member, “splitting” responsibilities or re-assignment of a portfolio can be discussed.

Some Board members are supported by committees. Board members are welcome to create committees to support their portfolios as they require.
