Eligibility
All members of the Barrie Curling Club in good standing are eligible to spare in any league with the following exceptions:
- Social members (members with membership type “Social” which does not include any league registrations) are not eligible to spare in league play.
- Competitive members (members with membership type “Competitive”) are not eligible to spare in league play.
- Spares are not permitted in Jitney leagues.
- For leagues with a provision for “drop-in” curling, spares must complete the drop-in registration process and pay any applicable fees.
Curlers who are not members of the Barrie Curling Club are not permitted to spare under any circumstances, even if a waiver form has been completed.
Responsibility for Finding Spares
Curlers unable to play are responsible for finding a spare to take their place. Curlers in Jitney leagues and Saturday Night curling are not required to find spares.
Maximum Number of Spares
In the interests of avoiding cancelled games, there may be circumstances where some or all players are spares. For a game to count towards point totals and league rankings, the maximum number of spares is as follows:
Four curler teams – maximum of two spares.
Four curler teams – where the league includes registration of a fifth or sixth team member, fifth and sixth curlers assigned to teams by the league convenor are members of that team, not spares.
Three curler teams (four curler league format) – in non-doubles play, where the convenor has assigned only three curlers to a team, a maximum of two spares is permitted.
Doubles curling – a maximum of one spare is permitted.
Doubles curling - where the league includes registration of a third or fourth player, third and fourth players assigned to doubles teams by the league convenor are members of that team, not spares.
Where the maximum number of spares specified above is exceeded, the win is awarded to the team satisfying the maximum number of spares. If both teams exceed the maximum number of spares specified above, the game is deemed a tie for the purposes of determining standings and points.
Fair Play
In the spirit of fair play, curlers should not “play down” more than one position as a spare. For example, curlers who regularly skip should refrain from sparing as a second or lead.
