Thank you for considering joining the Barrie Curling Club Board of Directors. The purpose of this document is to summarize the responsibilities of Board members. Complete information regarding the Board of Directors is available in the BCC by-laws, including the Terms of Reference document.

Click here to learn about the nominees for Director elections at the April 27th General Meeting.

Barrie Curling Club Board of Directors

The Board of Directors consists of up to twelve Directors. Directors are elected in April and serve a three-year term. In some cases, Directors serve a one- or two-year term if Board vacancies are due to a previous Director not being able to complete their three-year term.  Directors can serve on the Board for a maximum of six consecutive years.

The Board Executive consists of the President, Past President, First Vice-President, Second Vice-President, and the Secretary-Treasurer.

Meetings and Time Commitment

The Board meets monthly at the BCC (including the summer months). Board members are also expected to attend fall and spring General Meetings. While some Board members attend selected meetings remotely, most Board members meet in person. There is, of course, flexibility if Board members are unable to attend due to work, travel, or health reasons. In advance of each Board meeting, Board members submit brief status summaries for their portfolio(s). Between Board meetings, Board members move forward activities in their respective portfolios. Most Board members engage in active collaboration with other Board members and club members through e-mail and in-person discussion.

The BCC Board is a “working Board” – Directors are expected to provide oversight and governance but also to take an action role in the planning and execution of events and tasks within their portfolio(s) and within the BCC in general. While the club Manager is available to assist Board members, execution of events and tasks is completed by a mixture of Manager action, effort by Board members, and effort by club membership (as planned and coordinated by Directors and committees).

Board Portfolios

Each Board member is assigned one or more portfolios. Each portfolio represents an area of Director responsibility. Portfolios are normally assigned in May/June, after election of new Board members. Portfolios are assigned after consultations between the President and each Board member. In some cases, portfolios are also assigned to club members not on the Board.

Current Board portfolios:

  • Advertising / Sponsorship
  • Bar & Kitchen
  • Bylaws & Procedures
  • City of Barrie
  • Communications
  • Community Outreach
  • Curling Leagues
  • Curling Ontario
  • Events
  • Finance
  • Health & Safety
  • Ice Quality
  • Lottery
  • Marketing
  • Membership
  • Property & Infrastructure
  • Risk Management
  • Social Media
  • Strategic Planning
  • Youth Program
  • Volunteers

From the list above, multiple Board portfolios are likely to become available for 2026/2027.  Reasons for these portfolios becoming available include that the Board member is reaching the six-year maximum Board tenure, Board members not seeking re-election, and Board members shifting portfolios and areas of focus.

Should a newly elected Director have expertise in a portfolio currently assigned to a Board member, “splitting” responsibilities or re-assignment of a portfolio can be discussed.

Some Board members are supported by committees. Board members are welcome to create committees to support their portfolios as they require.

The Barrie Curling Club (BCC) regards player safety, including head injury avoidance and concussion recovery, to be of paramount importance. BCC Head Injury and Concussion policies and protocols include:

  1. Helmets are mandatory for curlers age 12 and under.
  2. Helmets are strongly recommended for all curlers.
  3. The BCC supports and follows the implementation of Rowan’s Law Concussion Protocol guidelines for curlers of all ages who sustain known or suspected head injuries while curling.
  4. Head/ Helmet Ice Contact Policy: An ambulance (911) will be called whenever a person on the ice falls and their head or helmet makes contact with the ice (or is seen to contact with the ice).
  5. Return to Sport Policy: When a person has fallen and their head or helmet makes contact with the ice (or is seen to make contact with the ice), they are able to return to their NEXT or later regularly scheduled game ONLY if one of the two following conditions are met:
    • The ambulance attendant assesses the person who has fallen, deems no further medical attention is required, and signs the relevant section of the BCC Incident Report form indicating the person is cleared to resume physical activities.
    • The person provides a medical note from either a Nurse Practitioner or Physician indicating the person is cleared to resume physical activities such as curling.

Curlers under the age of 18 and Parents and Guardians of curlers under the age of 18 are required to agree to the following before accessing BCC curling facilities:

  1. BCC Head/ Helmet Ice Contact Policy as stated above
  2. BCC Return to Sport policy as stated above
  3. Concussion Code of Conduct for Athletes and Parents/Guardians

Curlers ages 18 to 26 are required to agree to the following before accessing BCC curling facilities:

  1. BCC Head/ Helmet Ice Contact Policy as stated above
  2. BCC Return to Sport policy as stated above
  3. Concussion Code of Conduct for Athletes and Parents/Guardians

Curlers age 27 and over are required to agree to the following before accessing BCC curling facilities:

  1. BCC Head/ Helmet Ice Contact Policy as stated above
  2. BCC Return to Sport policy as stated above

Concussion Code of Conduct for Athletes and Parents/Guardians

I will help prevent concussions by:

  • Wearing the proper equipment for my sport and wearing it correctly.
  • Developing my skills and strength so that I can participate to the best of my ability.
  • Respecting the rules of my sport or activity.
  • My commitment to fair play and respect for all (respecting other athletes, coaches, team trainers and officials)

I will care for my health and safety by taking concussions seriously, and I understand that:

  • A concussion is a brain injury that I can have both short and long-term effects.
  • A blow to my head, face or neck, or a blow to the body that causes the brain to move around inside the skull may cause a concussion.
  • I don't need to lose consciousness to have had a concussion.
  • I have a commitment to concussion recognition and reporting, including self-reporting of possible concussion and reporting to a designated person when an individual suspects that another individual may have sustained a concussion. (Meaning: If I think I might have  a concussion I should stop participating in further training, practice or competition immediately, or tell an adult if I think another athlete has a concussion.)
  • Continuing to participate in further training, practice or competition with a possible concussion increases my risk of more severe, longer lasting symptoms, and increases my risk of other injuries.

I will not hide concussion symptoms. I will speak up for myself and others.

  • I will not hide my symptoms. I will tell a coach, official, team trainer, parent or another adult I trust if I experience any symptoms of concussion.
  • If someone else tells me about concussion symptoms, or I see signs they might have a concussion, I will tell a coach, official, team trainer, parent or another adult I trust so they can help.
  • I understand that if I have a suspected concussion, I will be removed from sport and that I will not be able to return to training, practice or competition until I undergo a medical assessment by a medical doctor or nurse practitioner and have been medically cleared to return to training, practice or competition.
  • I have a commitment to sharing any pertinent information regarding incidents of removal from sport with the athlete's school and any other sport organization with which the athlete has registered. (Meaning: If I am diagnosed with a concussion, I understand that letting all my other coaches and teachers know about my injury will help them support me while I recover.)

I will take the time I need to recover, because it is important for my health.

  • I understand my commitment to supporting the return to sport process (I will have to follow my sport organization's Return to Sport protocol).
  • I understand I will have to be medically cleared by a medical doctor or nurse practitioner before returning to training, practice or competition.
  • I will respect my coaches, team trainers, parents, healthcare professionals, and medical doctors and nurse practitioners, regarding my health and safety.

Welcome to the Saturday Night Curling Club (SNCC)!!! Barrie’s most social, unpredictable, and downright fun curling league! We’re so excited to have you joining us this season.

SNCC is a flexible hybrid-format league that turns every week into its own mini bonspiel. Each Saturday brings a new game style to keep things fresh:
Regular Night (classic six-end curling), Skip Till You Lose (lead the team until you’re dethroned), and Skins Night (every end’s a battle for points). This three-week rotation repeats all season, with one Skills Night to show off what you’ve learned.

Whether you’ve signed up as a team, pair, or free agent, we’ll balance lineups each week using our hybrid team and sub/drop-in system, so there’s always room for new players and friends.

Each curler earns individual points every week, tallied after every game: you get one just for showing up, plus extras for wins, bringing a friend, and completing weekly challenges. At season’s end, the top scorers take home the Golden Broom.

This isn’t just curling, it’s your new Saturday night tradition. Expect music, theme nights (yes, including Drag Night), prizes, and plenty of laughs on and off the ice.

Can’t wait to see you on the ice!

How to Find & Book Available Practice Ice

For the 2025-2026 curling season, unused sheets during league play will be made available as practice ice. If, for example, a league has 48 curlers (12 teams) and only uses 6 sheets, the 7th sheet will be available as practice ice.  This approach should help to provide some practice ice at different times of the day and some evenings.

How will this work?

  • Available practice ice timeslots will be listed on the website. Members will book practice ice similar to registering for a bonspiel. We are using the website booking system so that multiple teams do not show up for the same single sheet of practice ice.
  • Practice ice bookings will open approximately 7 days before practice date.
  • There will be a fee of $2 per practice sheet to book practice ice. The $2 fee is intended to encourage members to only book practice ice they are actually going to use. The $2 will be donated to Special Olympics/ Barrie Foodbank.
  • One member books the practice ice; up to seven other curlers (as coordinated by the member who booked the ice) can also practice. The $2 fee covers up to 8 curlers on one practice sheet.
  • During practice, curlers must ensure that league games on adjacent sheets are not impacted.
  • The current midday practice times will not require booking (no change to the process from previous years).
  • Practice ice is limited to Barrie Curling Club members.

How to Find & Book Available Practice Ice

Open practice is available Monday to Thursday, 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. (1:30 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. on Tuesdays). Open practice does not require pre-booking.

To find practice and book practice ice at other times, complete the following steps:

  1. Log in to barriecurlingclub.com
  2. Go to the Club Events menu listing (top of the screen)
