The Barrie Curling Club is kicking off the 2023-2024 in a big way as they host the Stu Sells Tankard and Stu Sells Junior Tankard starting October 5. The events will bring a total of 66 teams in four competition categories to the curling facility on Essa Road. Teams are coming from all over North America and the world.
Visiting rinks include previous Brier (Canadian Men’s Championship) competitors such as Matthew Manuel (Nova Scotia), John Epping (Ontario), among others, and multi-time Champion Glenn Howard. On the women’s side, Scotties Tournament of Hearts (Canadian Women’s Championship) finalist Krista McCarville and team from Thunder Bay, Ontario, lead a strong field into competition. International visitors include the 2018 Olympic Championship team skipped by John Shuster (USA), plus teams from Japan, China, Switzerland, Scotland and South Korea. Athletes from Newfoundland and Labrador, Quebec and Saskatchewan will also be competing.
On top of the action on the curling ice, and in light of it being Thanksgiving weekend, teams and spectators are encouraged to bring non-perishable items to the club for donation to the Barrie Food Bank.
